Life Story for Eva Katrina aka Katarina aka Katharina Rittman (Zlater)

RITTMAN, Eva Katrina (Katharina) (Katarina) - After a 14 year journey with Alzheimer’s disease, Eva Rittman (nee Zlatar) died at Millennium Trail Manor on Monday 13 August 2018 at the age of 90. Born in Sonta, Yugoslavia on 7 May 1928, Eva’s parents died when she was young and she was raised in a foster home. She emigrated to Canada with her belongings in one suitcase, speaking no English. She met her future husband George (a Ford Glass Plant employee) at a German Village dance and they married on 25 October 1958, but had no children. Eva proudly became a Canadian citizen in 1966. She learned English, studied to become a licensed hairdresser and opened her own business (Belle Tress) on Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls. When George developed a terminal illness, following his retirement, Eva looked after him at home until his death on 16 June 1992. Eva spoke several languages, was an accomplished businesswoman and an excellent hostess. She loved gardening, travel, music, cooking, African violets, and crochet. She was devoted to her poodles Heidi and Daisy and her birds. Her former residence on Buckingham Drive reflected the pride she felt in home ownership and the time she spent on property beautification. Although she was not quite 5 feet tall, Eva’s faith, determination, work ethic and opinions were big and powerful. Since 8 November 2004, Eva resided at Millennium Trail Manor, only a few miles away from her former residence. The staff there provided wonderful support and care for Eva throughout the last almost fourteen years. They added quality, humour and dignity to her life, even when she sometimes expressed her strong will in a contrary manner. Compassionate and attentive care for Eva was also provided by Dr. Joanna Hill, Dr. Philip McGarry and Dr. Dan Dargavel. She will be missed by Millennium Trail Manor staff, by her friend Helen Fitzgerald and by her friend Pamela Verrill Walker.
Cremation has taken place through arrangements entrusted to MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls, Ontario L2G 5Z7. A private interment service will take place at a later date at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery. Memories, photos and condolences may be shared at www.morseandson.com As an expression of sympathy, Eva would want you to perform a random act of kindness.
