Allan’s early employment began at Dorchester Manor and the Boys and Girls Club. Among many duties, he served to provide safe transportation for residents, and student members of the club. In 1977, Allan found his niche with St. John Ambulance and was influential in the initiation of the Chair-A-Van Service. Over the years he served on the Board of Directors and became the Superintendent of the Niagara Falls Division. He subsequently became the Corps Staff Officer for Niagara Falls, Welland, Port Colborne and Fort Erie. Allan’s accomplishments with St. John include covering for Merrittville Speedway, Welland County Motorcycle Club and more prominently, the visit of Pope John Paul II in Toronto and the visit of Queen Elizabeth II for her Diamond Jubilee.
Allan’s commitment has awarded him such medals as the St. John Ambulance Service Medal acknowledging 10,000 hours of volunteer service. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International for his involvement in the initiation of Chair-A-Van. Most prestigiously, Allan was honoured as a Serving Brother in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.
