The last time I saw Mike was in August 2013 at Niagara Square. I was standing waiting for someone when I heard that familiar voice with the one of a kind expression, " Hey, Denis". I was so surprised and happy to see it was my dear childhood friend. In the mid 1990s I use to see Mike often times at the Niagara Falls arena because both of our sons were in hockey and at times played together.
I think I was about 4 or 5 years old when I can first remember Mike because he came to my birthday party. Back then on Loma Road every one was your friend and almost like family.
One of my most cherished memories I have of Mike was back in the 60s. On a warm summer afternoon when I was at Queensway Park hanging out with friends, Mike drove his bike off the main road and into the park towards me. He stopped and said with a smile and a twinkle in his eye, "Hey, Denis, get on". I was so surprised and honoured. All my friends were in awe. This was the first time I was ever on a motor bike, and not just any motor bike, but on Mike Finelli's Harley. I wish I could have taken a selfie of us back then. We drove around for about an hour on roads and through parks. He scared me a little when we drove through Mimico creek.
Mike has never forgotten his roots and his childhood friends. I am so thankful that he was a part of my life and I will always remember his soft side and his frienship over the years. Thank you Mike for the wonderful memories and for your brotherhood frienship. I will miss you.
