MAVES, Peter John. After a courageous and hard-fought battle against cancer, it is with heavy hearts that we announce that Pete passed away peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital on August 2, 2018, at 78 years of age.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 58 years, Paula, his three treasured sons and their spouses; Brad & Christine, Bart & Julie, Brett & Debbie. “Poppa Chubbs” will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren Matthew, Lee, Michael (Alex), Brayden, Aynsley, Spencer, Kyle and Abby Maves as well as great-grandchildren William, Joseph, Jack and Cameron. Peter is also survived by many of his 15 beloved brothers and sisters.
We are so proud of the life he led and the example he set. Pete cherished his 15 siblings and the entire Maves family. He was the “German work ethic man” who did everything honestly and ethically. He taught us all to “be tenacious” in everything we do.
A young Niagara Entrepreneur, Pete owned Niagara Office Supply for over 17 years and was then a long-time Sales Representative for Beatties. Even after retirement, Pete continued to work part time as a Starter at Thundering Waters Golf Club until the age of 77.
He gave greatly to his community, having served as Chairman of the Board of the GNGH; led many GNGH Fundraising campaigns including its first CT Scanner Campaign. He was a 25-year member of the Rotary Club and served as its President; Peter was in the Jaycee’s and also served as its President; he was a Greater Niagara Baseball Association player, coach and sponsor. His wife Paula was an equal participant with him in all of these endeavours.
Pete was a very active curler for over 30 years at the Niagara Falls Curling Club and the Niagara region curling scene was always a treasured part of his life.
As an expression of sympathy, those who wish, may make a memorial donation to the Niagara Health Foundation (GNGH site) through Morse & Son Funeral Home. In keeping with his wishes, a private family internment service will take place at a later date, followed by a gathering to celebrate his life.
