John "Jack" Stephenson
STEPHENSON, John “Jack”- Peacefully at Millennium Trail Manor, Niagara Falls on September 2, 2019 at the age of 101. Predeceased by his beloved wife Milly (Sauer) in 2009. Beloved father of the late Paul (2013) (Anne), Glenn (Pamela), Jim and the late Robbie (1949). Loving grandfather of Krista, Jenn (Tom), Kyle and Sara. Great grandfather of Eden and Georgia Kelly. Also survived by brother Cline Stephenson and sister-in-law Berenice Sauer. Predeceased by his sister Lillian Patterson. Jack worked at Dominion Chain for 27 years and then the City of Niagara Falls engineering department, retiring in 1982. Jack was very involved with sports in high school and his Inter County Baseball team won the provincial senior OBA championship in 1940, 1941 and 1946. During his baseball career, 1938-1950, Jack was known to many as “Riggs.” Jack also played basketball for the General Brocks Basketball Team that won the Ontario Intermediate ‘A’ Championship twice and also with Hamcos, who won a national title. Jack was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame in 1994 as an athlete and as a member of six championship teams. In 1942, his sports career was interrupted by his enlistment with RCAF. He served overseas with a radar unit in RAF Coastal Command until the end of the war. Jack married Milly in December 1945 and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather throughout his life. Jack was a longtime member of Willoughby United (Sauer) Church.
Cremation has taken place. Jack’s family will receive friends at Morse & Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main Street on Friday, September 6th from 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
The family would like to thank the generous and supportive staff at Millennium Trail Manor. Dad and the family felt secure in your care and greatly respected all of the staff.
